The GREETING

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
And also with you.

I invite you, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.

The COLLECT FOR PURITY

Almighty God to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant introduces the

CONFESSION

After a short pause for self examination, all say

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought and word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may walk in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Celebrant pronounces the

ABSOLUTION

Please remain standing

The Celebrant intones the

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please sit to listen to the

READING

2 Corinthians 5: 20b – 6: 10

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Choristers sing

THE GRADUAL

Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; not let his eye see sin but through my tears.

Orlando Gibbons (1585–1623)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
